Issues and fixes


An EA/Origin key is provided with any Steam purchase of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. This key must be activated to an EA/Origin account. Steam Support cannot issue a new key or modify the EA/Origin system in any way. If you forgot which EA account you activated a key to, you *must* contact EA support to recover your lost account.


Please review the Third-Party Game Support topic to determine whether your question should be directed to the game developer or to Steam Support. Sending a support request to the wrong party may result in a delay in processing your request.


Retail CD-Keys for this game cannot be registered through Steam. If you wish to create a shortcut to this game under your Library, instructions can be found here:

Secondary Installers

If you're encountering issues with launching Battlefield: Bad Company 2, make sure everything installed smoothly.

Aside from verifying your game cache and checking your connection with Steam, you may also need to manually run secondary installers required by this game.

Exit Steam entirely.

Browse to your Battlefield: Bad Company 2 installation folder (Usually C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\battlefield bad company 2\)

Run the following installers:

  • ...\Steamapps\common\battlefield bad company 2\install\redistributable\x86\vcredist.msi
  • ...\Steamapps\common\battlefield bad company 2\install\DirectX\dxsetup.exe
  • ...\Steamapps\common\battlefield bad company 2\install\PunkBuster\pbsvc_bc2.exe

Reboot your computer and test the issue again. If the issue persists, contact Bad Company 2 support.


Activation of addons such as the SPECACT kit or the Vietnam expansion

You can obtain your CD Key for these addons by right-clicking on Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in your Steam Library and selecting "View CD Key."


If you do not see the CD Key for Bad Company 2 or an expasion that you have purchased, verify your game cache and try again.

Write your expansion/addon CD Key down and try the following:

  1. Launch Bad Company 2
  2. Click the "Login" button in the upper-right corner of the main menu screen
  3. Log in to your EA / Bad Company 2 account
  4. Click Multiplayer
  5. Click Redeem Code

If you continue to encounter issues with the addon / expansion activation process, contact Bad Company 2 support.


Bad Company 2 game activation and EA accounts

In order to play this game, you will need to sign up with EA Studio's service for Battlefield Bad Company 2 as outlined below:

  • Right-click on the game in the "My Games" tab in Steam and select 'View Game CD Key'.  Carefully write down any keys displayed
  • Select "Launch Game"
  • Once at the main menu, choose the "Login" button, along the upper right
  • Log in to, or create, your EA account and register your '"Battlefield: Bad Company 2" CD Key.  Please ensure you do not enter any dashes when you input your CD Key, otherwise you will receive an invalid key error. 
  • If you received a 'Promo Key', please register this key with EA as well.  The 'Promo Key' unlocks additional items in-game.  If you receive an invalid key error and you did not include dashes in your Promo Key, please contact EA Support from the link provided below in this article.



OS Specific Troubleshooting

If the above does not resolve the issue and you are running Windows 7 or Windows Vista, please complete the instructions in our Windows 7 and Vista Troubleshooting FAQ.

If you are running in Windows XP, take the following steps:

  1. Exit Steam.
  2. Go to the Start menu, select Run, type regedit and click OK.
  3. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\VALVE
  4. Right click and select Permissions
  5. Check the Allow boxes for Admin and System for both Full control and Read.
