Apple handles all system and driver updates for your system.

To check if any updates are available please do the following:

  • Click on the Apple in the upper left corner of the screen
  • Select "Software Update..."
  • Any updates available will be listed and able to be downloaded or you will be told your software is up to date

Important:

You must uninstall the old drivers before installing updated drivers to avoid driver conflicts.

Steam Support assumes no responsibility for the effects that changing the driver for your video or sound card may have on your system - it is your responsibility to follow the instructions provided by the video card manufacturer to ensure the proper removal of old drivers and installation of updated drivers.

Check the Versions of Installed Drivers

It is recommended that you check the versions of the drivers currently installed on your system before looking for updates - please follow the instructions below to see which drivers are installed:

  1. Go to the Start button and select Run...
  2. Enter dxdiag and click OK to run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
  3. The tool will start on the System tab - check the System Information box for the Operating System
  4. Switch to the Display tab. In the upper left corner is a box named Device. The first three lines are the Name, Manufacturer, and Chip Type of your video hardware.
  5. Check the upper right-hand corner of this tab for a box named Drivers.
  6. The second line is the video driver Version number, and the third is the Date of release.
  7. Click "Exit" in the lower right hand corner of the window to close the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

Use the Operating System, video card name & manufacturer, and driver version information to search your video card or computer manufacturer's site for updated drivers which will be compatible with your system.

While your video hardware may meet the system requirements of the game you are playing, using outdated drivers may prevent the game from displaying correctly.

Video Card Manufacturers

If you purchased a separate video card or cannot obtain the appropriate drivers through the computer manufacturer you may be able to obtain updated drivers from the manufacturer of your video card.

Please consult your video card manufacturer or computer assembler if you have any questions regarding the installation of updated drivers.

Nvidia Notebook Video Drivers

Nvidia offers notebook drivers for most of their video hardware. Please check their website for the latest driver for your system.

If a driver is not available or is not compatible with your system (as with some Sony notebooks), you may be able to install a modified third party driver using www.laptopvideo2go.com. Some technical experience is necessary for installing the drivers found on this site.

To download the appropriate drivers, you will need to locate your video hardware's device ID, which will be similar to the following:

      PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_05E3&SUBSYS_11803842

This information can be found in the display section of the Msinfo32 application.

A quickstart guide can be found here.

ATI Notebook Video Drivers

ATI does not directly offer drivers for notebook hardware. Please check your Notebook manufacturer's website for updated drivers. If current drivers are not available, you may be able to download modified third party drivers from http://www.driverheaven.net/. A step-by-step installation guide can be found be scrolling down on that page.
